I'm getting a series of errors when I try to compile a simple blink sketch. THe error is:
Third-party platform.txt does not define compiler path.
Any ideas?

Never seen that before. Download and install the Adafruit Arduino IDE again - maybe it got corrupted somehow?

Note that the ide works for other boards. It just doesnt work with the trinket

I don't think the manual setup for Trinket works with 1.5.7. You should be using our pre-configured 1.0.5, linked in the tutorial:
