Old PICALLW software on w7 64-bit

Postby Sensor Geek » Sun May 20, 2012 8:57 pm

While cleaning up the shop I found an old P16PRO40 parallel port PIC programmer from dontronics.com. The Windows software supplied with it is quite old but still available free from this link. It officially supports up to XP.

http://picallw.feniks-pro.com/ (see software link on left).

I''d like to give this to someone, but we use the same OS (W7 64-bit) and I cannot get it working on my system. The program runs but never displays a window. Is it hopeless?

Does someone have a link to a cheap USB PIC programmer that supports w7 64-bit? Couldn't find anything in the Adafruit store.

I'll answer my own question here - at least the software problem. Someone has created a current version of the software needed for these old programmers which works on w7 64-bit:

Still, I wouldn't mind knowing about any cheap USB PIC programmers you like.

Thanks for the reply. That just might do the job.

If you want cheap, you can get Pickit 2 clones on ebay for <$20. For the most part they work. There are also plans on the internet to build your own for <$10 worth of parts.

You can get cheaper programmers but the Pickit 2 (and 3) does debug as well and is pretty easy to use. Atmel could learn from Microchip.

You could also contact your local college and either try to buy one through them (using the volume pricing) or get one cheap from a student that suddenly decided culinary school is better than electronics. :)
