Remote Data Logging Help

Hello, I would like to ask the community for help in recommending the best approach(es) to remotely data log simple events (e.g. switch on/ switch off). The system would allow time-stampted data to be collected over a prescribed period of time and then be transmitted wirelessly (e.g. WiFi) on a schedule or on demand ultimately to a smart phone as well as other applications, such as MS-Excel. Any recommendations would be appreciated! The simplest approach using the most inexpensive components are desirable. Thanks!
