Hi,
I purchased a type A USB shell connector (product 1387) and I think I can glean how the green, red, white, and black internal wires connect from this diagram and the old plug end I cut off. but I'm wondering if I need to connect the shield wire somewhere. I don't just need USB power, I need to communicate with an Arduino. And I needed the connector, because I will be running the USB cable through an enclosure with cable gland (reference image attached). Thanks.

The shield wire can be connected to the shell of the USB connector. It is not used for communications but noise immunity.
