I was wondering about the simple act of powering down the Raspberry Pi.
Seems to me that there are two possible ways:
pulling out the brick from the AC socket,
or pulling the microUSB plug from the Pi mobo.
There could be a significant difference: disconnecting the transformer from
the main power while connected to the Pi could still allow the resulting surge to enter
the Pi; while disconnecting the power cable first should be less problematic.
But what are the actual causes of SD card failure when used with the Pi?
Causes of corrupted SD cards?

Re: Causes of corrupted SD cards?
Card failure or card corruption?
Corruption can occur if the power fails when the Pi is in the middle of writing to the card. If it is writing to a file, you can end up with a corrupted file. If it is updating the directory, it can corrupt the whole directory.
