Car Powering Neopixels

Post by catcoffee »

I'm trying to adapt the Larson Scanner project for use with my car. (Knight Rider BANNED Tercel!) https://learn.adafruit.com/larson-scann ... s/overview
I understand all of the tutorial and have the prototype working off a Lipo and Gemma in my dining room. But I'm certain that hooking it up to a circuit in my car is a recipe for disaster without somehow converting the voltage. My plan is to hook it up to the cig lighter. How should I convert the power for the Neopixel strip?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you are using a 5v Trinket, you can use a UBEC to convert the ~12v from the car to 5v for your circuit.: https://www.adafruit.com/products/1385
For a 3.3v trinket, you would need a 3.3v converter. We don't have any here. You can check over at www.pololu.com.
