The TSR12450 is an amazing little device that steps voltage down efficiently, and produces output clean enough for an Arduino or even a RasPi. You can definitely use it as a direct power supply for a Metro Mini.

If you use an LM7812 to control the power going to the LED strip, you can connect that power to your Metro Mini's Vin pin. The 7812 will trim any spikes above 12v, giving you a respectably clean rail at that voltage. The LED strips will inject some noise into that rail if you PWM them, but the Metro Mini's onboard regulator will be able to provide a smooth 5v to the microcontroller.
