How can I use a single integrated micro USB port to both cha

Post by ldodge417 »

"How can I use a single integrated micro USB port to both charge and program a Gemma"

Or a Flora. Or any other board of similar size.

Basically I want one micro USB connection for the end user that plugs into one port for both charging and programming purposes. I will be surprised if this has not been asked before, but I am having trouble finding a post about it.

Solutions I have thought of are using a single port and then having a (4 pole?) switch that would connect to the USB cable and work as a toggle, like toggle the switch one way to charge and another way to program. Is there a better way?

Boards that program through a USB port almost always take power from that port when a USB cable is connected.

The Gemma and Flora do take power from a USB cable when connected, but I don't think they charge any Lipo batteries that are also connected. That is what im trying to accomplish.

Ah.. that would be something like our LiPo Backpack: https://www.adafruit.com/product/2124

The schematic for it is here: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-pro ... /downloads

Thank you, that is EXACTLY what I was talking about.

At 32:26 here https://youtu.be/6wSZWXRm830?t=1946

Ladyada talks about how she wants to make this work with other boards, this video was from a year ago, do you know if this backpack will work with the Gemma or Flora or the normal trinket, or is it still just for the pro trinket? I can't tell from the schematic. Thanks!

EDIT:

From reading this tutorial here:

https://learn.adafruit.com/genesis-poi- ... oi/circuit

It looks like you can scratch away a trace on the circuit board and it will work with the original trinket.

The bakpack will work with any 3.3v-capable microcontroller board, you'll just need to wire the connections properly.

The backpack's pin connections on the edge of the board match the ones along the edge of the Pro Trinket, so you can solder it directly onto the pin header. For other boards, you'll need to run jumpers from the backpack to the corresponding pins.
