MIDI issue...

Postby KitShunt » Wed Feb 23, 2011 10:39 am

Hello x0xers.

I have just completed my build and everything's a-ok (thank f@#k!) apart from one small thing:

when I came to tune the VCO, i decided to use MIDIplay mode to trigger notes from the MIDI in. but for some reason my x0x will not respond to input MIDI data.

The MIDI out works fine, and I have double checked the circuit around the MIDI in socket for continuity and there are no breaks, everything seems to be well connected.

Has anyone else had such a problem? It's not really that important, I don't plan to use the machine in MIDIplay mode, but it is a mild irritation!

Cheers yo!
James.

for midi-play mode, you must select a midi channel on which the x0x will respond to midi notes
rotate the BANK knob to select a midi channel (displayed on the bank LEDs)
now when you send the notes, make sure you're sending to that same channel

Thanks for the reply antto.

Of course I have verified the data send and recieve channels are corresponding.
I have even tried switching the recieve channel through 1 - 16, just in case there's some glitch in the firmware that means the switch doesn't match up to the actual channel.

I think there must be something else going on here.

nah man, none of the midi in stuff works.

I was sure it must have been a dodgy solder joint or something, but having checked the circuit around that jack, everything seems to be in order... most confusing!

as i mentioned before, I can send midi out, sync'ing external hardware/software, but not vice-versa.

check r16, if you have a 100ohm resistor soldered, swap it with a 150ohm resistor.

from the fabrication manual i/o board:

Note: in batch #6 we've started to notice that the optoisolators are possibly made to a different specification. If MIDI out and MIDI thru are working but MIDI in is not, try upping R16 to 120 or 150 ohms!

in case you hadnt tested this
i think what xlarge was suggesting
was that you take your midi in cable
and plug it into the midi thru jack
and see if it repsonds to the midi messages

Ah right, I'll try both of those things and see what happens.

I totally forgot about the resistor swap solution!

Cheers for the suggestions guys,
I'll get on it and let you know how it goes!

Just popped in a 150ohm to R16, and whaddya know? Works a treat!

Thanks again for all the suggestions,
and apologies for the schoolboy error of not reading-the-bloody-manual! hehe...

Have a great day everyone.
