XBee - can configure but not transmit

I hope this isn't a faq. I've been trying for the last day or so to configure two XBees. X-CTU has successfully updated the firmware. I can speak AT commands with the XBees, but they don't transmit to each other.

I've gone through the setups in the tutorial here, and on the resource pages given in the tutorial but no luck so far. Some of the stuff I've seen says that the green LED should flash when talking to it, but it does not. The red LED doesn't come on at all. I reset them both back to defaults, and then configured only the PAN id. I've looked through the user guide from Digi but I don't see an answer there either (although I wouldn't be surprised to find I just missed it).

I know that Series 2 modems aren't officially supported here, but I'm hoping someone has a link to a configuration tutorial for them - apparently it's different than series 1. I'd appreciate a clue if someone has one handy.

Digi has a support forum. You will probably find more series 2 expertise over there.
