i2c backpack troubles

Postby bebo » Wed Sep 14, 2011 4:34 pm

Just assembled the i2c backpack and connected it to the 16x2 blue LCD [the one for $9.95, it says 1620A-17 on the part, couldn't find a part number on the invoice]. I downloaded the new LiquidCrystal library and tried the Hello World i2c sketch. The LCD lit up, and all that happened was the first row of pixels flashed, but no hello world. I followed the instructions on the website, but this LCD had two rows of 16 holes, one on the top of the LCD [as indicated by the up arrow] and one on the bottom. I soldered it to the bottom row, with the hole nearest the screw connector of the backpack on hole 16 of the LCD. In other words, if you are holding the backpack with the silkscreen lettering facing up, hole 1 of the LCD is on the left, and hole 16 is on the right. All the connections look sound, no cold joints or bridging, but I suspect maybe I should have soldered it to the other row of holes?? Soldered it the other way?? I would appreciate all insight and assistance......and Thank You Adafruit industries for the service you provide. It's pretty f***in remarkable what a hundred bucks can get you...

Can you post a photo of this?

I haven't seen one like that. All the 16x2 displays I have here have just the row of connectors on top.
Are the pins on the bottom numbered in reverse of the ones on top? Make sure that the end with the Adafruit logo lines up with pin 1.

Both rows of pins have the same numbering order; pin one toward the edge, and pin 16 toward the middle........which means I get to learn about desoldering 16 connections Yaaay!. This order was shipped last Saturday [the one you sent to West Virginia, I'm sure there weren't too many going there]. Strange that I ended up with the only one with two rows. Thanks for the help...

This is the same LCD I got from Adafruit on 08/12, with pins on top and bottom. I did not try to use the bottom but I know the top ones work fine. I had assumed the lower ones were just reversed but never attempted to use them, this was a blue LCD which is now out of stock.
Thanks,

Brian

Strange that I ended up with the only one with two rows.

There was probably a whole shipment of them that came that way. It's just that none of them ended up on my bench.

yes! sorry for the delayed response. 16x2 lcds are so common we often get them from different factories depending on price and volume - sometimes we end up with 2-row ones. they just have a duplicated row which can be useful!
