Making this fully RoHs

Hi there I know I am late jumping onto this project late but thanks Willzyx for keeping it alive. I would like to make this one fully RoHs and was wondering if anyone was successful with this and which solder worked best for you. I have never had luck with lead free solder because of how painful it is to wet and the temperature required just makes a mess of things. Let me know.

id be a bit suprised if it was possible
to make it completely rohs compliant
or at least provably so
as the rare components are pre rohs

Lead free solder. It simply does not work, it will not wet properly at a normal temperature. Im just asking advice on which one has worked for people that is all

you have to turn the temperature up
for lead free solder to work
i dont know of any low temp varieties

use a bit of flux to help it out

Thats exactly right 400+ and sometimes still doesnt wet, gets messy very quickly, not a snappy job like the toxic stuff. Was wondering if there was a better product to try

No problems with lead free solder here, and thats using a boggo standard Antex soldering iron. It needs a little more time to heat, but other than that, it's all good.
But I admit, leaded solder is bit easier to work with, so I use that for repairs, and, umm, build 'errors'
As for ROHS, as Guest says, the rare components won't be ROHS as they are already 20+ years old anyway. But other than those.... It should be doable. My first x0xb0x build was self sourced.. And pretty much all the major suppliers show on their websites whether the selected parts are ROHS certified or not.

That said, I think the whole ROHS thing is complete bollocks anyway.

i just grabbed the only roll of rohs stuff we have
and tested it out
it seems to work ok
took a bit longer to heat up

i ran my iron at 720F

make sure your iron works well with leaded solder
before spending money on more solder
as the tip could just be bad

Yes the rare parts are not compliant but the rest is.
Nearly all parts are now rohs.
Around 370 c is fine. There is thinner gauge which fluxes faster.


RoHs bollocks? check out where electro waste goes...... yes they are living in that , drinking and eating too. The least we can do anyway.
At least now their grandchildren won't have the lead in their brains.

It's bollocks where making things to last is concerned. If we didn't have such a "throw-away" culture now, it wouldn't matter half as much.
I doubt my x0xb0x will be landfill in 2 years time. Unlike for example, your average mobile phone. Same for TV's and lord knows what else. None of it lasts long because the reality is that it's all become cheap mass produced disposable tat.
