SPOKE POV short circuit problem

Postby Electrogeek » Tue Aug 30, 2011 8:25 am

Hello,
i ve build an Spoke POV Kit with orange LEDs which dosent work as it should.

My problem is this, when i put in both batteries one batterie on the other end oppsite where the atmel is.
Gets very hot, so ive checked the batterie holders and i noticed a short circuit between plus and minus.
I looked at the solder connections but without any brigdes or cold solder joints.
Everthing looks fine.

So then ive connected an external dc power to the J1 joint with 3 V and it worked as it should.

My big question is now why is there a short circuit and is there any board layout shematic so i can follow the traces.
Besides i think the big electrolytic capacitor is wrong installed maybe can anybody check is out.

I hope the pictures are helping, i would be happy for every idea.
Thanks a lot

Make sure all the leads under the batteries are clipped and not shorting against the cell.

Have you been able to fix this? I have the exact problem and I'm sure the batter is not shorting against the leads.

Post photos of the front & back of the boards and we'll look for an assembly issues.

I've added a picture of a bare board with an ohm meter across the terminals of the bottom battery.

I can't quite see your meter dial or where your probes are contacting. But are you seeing 0.3 ohms between the unpopulated positive and negative battery terminals?

Yes, 0.3 ohms with the leads are connected to the pos and neg terminals of the bottom battery.

Does the built-up board measure about the same? (without batteries installed)

You are using the 1st and 3rd battery locations. The 3rd one is only needed for higher voltage leds like the blue ones. You should be using the 1st and 2nd batter locations as in the photo:
