x0x Project Resurection! (Self sourced)

Postby MereTenacity » Thu Dec 15, 2011 2:48 pm

A friend and I meticulously sourced all hq parts for 3 x0x'es 2.5 years ago. Since then, college ended and we both became incredibly busy at our tech jobs. I'm sick and tired of looking at this 99% completed work of art. Time to finish it. It has been soldered with all parts (EXCEPT LED's and LED Resistors) and no mods. All parts were specd from http://www.ladyada.net/make/x0xb0x/fab/parts.html and most ordered from mouser and digikey. Some rare parts were haggled over and pried from somewhat willing hands.

So...

Mounted on a nice boardholder, I set out to track down the issue.

Current Symptoms:
No notes from headphone, just a DC pop when i hit a note. I can jump my headphones to the vco and hear notes, play them, etc.

This (obviously?) points to the vcf section.

Weird readings (as compared to the reference chart - viewtopic.php?f=12&t=12453#p91815 )

IC11's pins (marked as getting 2v) are only getting about .6v

also:
C5 gets hot pretty fast

Thanks in advance for any help. I feel like I'm flailing here.

c5 should not be getting hot
what is the voltage across it
what is the voltage across c8
triple check that it is orientated properly
and then check for hot nearby components
the heat might be from ic20

ARgh, long day, it's not C5, but IC20. duh. Still seems to heat up quick.

Getting 6.75, 0, 4.75v on ic20

C8 seems to be getting 0 on one side, a 19.9v on the other? That sounds a bit high.

I'm pulling ground from R179 for my readings.

19v is good
but 6.7v is too low

is there a heatsink on ic20
how long can you hold your finger against it for
check to see if anything else is getting warm on ioboard or mainboard

I can feel it getting warm within a few seconds, but takes a minute or more to get HOT.

No heatsink, but if this is normal operation, it will get one before it goes in a case.

Nothing else (after 2 minutes) is perceptibly warmer than ambient.

it should have a heatsink

what is the voltage of your powersupply
it should be 9vac
perhaps measure its output

the voltages are a bit low
although i dont think thats your main problem here
but the 5v dropping down to 4.75v will cause problems later
unless of course your meter is just reading low

do you hear notes changing when you listen at the waveform switch
and play a pattern
do you hear anything on resonance pot
