Touchshield not responding

Postby whmckinley » Wed Oct 12, 2011 11:45 pm

Received a new Touchshield. Began testing, ran tft display graphictest demo and the
tft display works without issue, wrote my own code tested no issue. Went to
run the resistive screen demo's both the tftpaint and touchscreen demo and
both failed to respond to touch. Measured resistance on y axis 646 ohms x
axis 328 no change in resistance regardless of press pressure.

Test platform is a new uno 1 week old which I have only tested with TMP36
sensors to analog, they tested without issue both before and after tftshield
use

Have you tried pressing in different locations on the screen? Did you remove the protective plastic from the screen?

Removed the protective screen before i even plugged it in (read posts on forum before even ordering it), tried different area's of the display, now up to 3 arduino's I have tried it on. Same results, Printing to display works fine, touch screen doesn't work on all 3. Mega,Duemilanove and the Uno. tried low screen pressure, high screen pressure, stylus.

When I first ran tftpaintshield the page loaded properly
but I didn't get any response from 'touching' it. Tried again
a bit later and was disappointed until I used a finger nail . . .
The pad of a finger is a bit to resilient it seems, but a finger
nail provides enough point pressure to do it easily.

use a stylus (thats actually whats its designed for) - some peoples fingers are 'pointy' enough but a stylus always works

There ought to be something explaining this up front . I got the touch shield today, installed the libraries and was running demos. Within 5 minutes I have a 1 inch crack in the screen across a corner. I was touching it with my finger, not the finger nail and it requires a bit of force. Not that much, but more than the glass can handle. With a finger nail or a stylus(I guess) it works just fine other except the glass is now broken.

Seriously, the image on the adafruit site for the touch shield ought to be changed. A finger cannot safely be used. It must be the nail or a stylus. The force required to use the pad of a finger, even a pointy one, is enough to crack the display. I am kind of grumpy about this. The lcd still works past the crack but the touch does not.

hi,

we've added an additional note on the page(s) - so far this has not been a problem that has happened many times (out of thousands and thousands sold, just a few folks).

http://www.ladyada.net/wiki/tutorials/p ... nt_example

The touch screen is made of a thin glass sheet, and its very fragile - a small crack or break will make the entire touch screen unusable. Don't drop or roughly handle the TFT and be especially careful of the corners and edges.

When pressing on the touchscreen, sometimes people can use the tip of their fingers, or a fingernail. If you don't find the touchscreen responds well to your fingers, you can use a rounded stylus which will certainly work. Do not press harder and harder until the screen cracks!

if you need to purchase another one, email support@adafruit.com and we'll do the best we can to offer some type of discount.

thanks!
