Adafruit motor shield problems

I am very new to the arduino and I am trying to control the speed and direction of two small dc motors using the adafruit motor shield. Can anyone give me a sample code and tell me what pins to connect the motor to? I can currently make it start and stop in one direction, but i can not control speed or direct. I have it hooked up as "Motor 2" with one wire to ground and one to the "Motor 2" port. i am using I/O pins 6 and 7 to attempt to control it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You don't need to control the pins directly. Use the AFMotor library to control it. Download the library and follow the example code there.
