GPS Logger shield with uBlox MAX6 Module 3.3v question

Postby _Hix » Wed Feb 29, 2012 7:49 am

Hi,

I've bought and assembled the GPS Logger shield v1.1
I am using the uBlox MAX6 GPs http://www.u-blox.com/images/downloads/Product_Docs/MAX-6_DataSheet_%28GPS.G6-HW-10106%29.pdf module though, as I already have one with a breakout board.

I am just checking as I have been advised that Arduino [uno smd] will tx 5v to the gps module through the shield.
I am also unsure what voltage the shield will supply to the GPS as I've been told I'll need to step the voltage down to 3.3v for the gps
Schematic for the breakout is here
https://github.com/Upuaut/Eagle-Libraries/blob/master/MAX6%20Breakout/max6_breakout_1575AT43A40.sch
Any help would be greatly recieved as I am a noob at this

Many thanks

Great,
Just checking on VCC supply though, the uBlox states a voltage range of 2.5-3.6 with current draw of 76mA whereas the Arduino Uno SMD board I have specs say that 3.3v pin is 50mA max.
Would I have to supply a separate regulated 3.3v to the VCC of the GPS to handle this requirement?

Hi,

Just a double check. I connected the uBlox MAX 6 using a combination of the em-406 cable [with no vcc] and soldered the vcc from the uBlox to the vcc pin on the EB-85A.

I connected a usb-serial lead to the rx and cnd pins on the FTDI header. I then used a console to interrogate COM10 - which the usb-serial was recognised as. But saw nothing. Have I got the method right for this GPS, as there is not specific mounting for it?

I have no experience with that module. You might try swapping Rx & Tx, since sometimes they are defined differently.
