Need help: Project boxes

Postby MrGlass » Mon Mar 19, 2012 1:43 pm

I have limited tools & even less traditional maker skills, so I am hitting a bit of a brick wall with the case for my clock project. It needs to be ~ 11-12" wide, 2-3" high, and 2 or 3 inches deep. My friend had the idea to buy a prefab shadowbox, but I can't find any that are this wide and short.

Any thoughts on good options for a project case?

Any preference for materials? Some finer bottles of spirits come packaged in wooden boxes or tins of similar dimensions.

I was thinking either a black metal or thick plastic. I could setup everything inside, and then cut a black plastic sheet to cover everything but the digits on the face of my clock.

You might search for extruded aluminum boxes. Hammond is one manufacturer:

I think I've seen boxes about that size at Michael's (the craft store). Probably one near you, or you may find the right size online.

I have sheets of black High Density Polyurethane (HDPE) around 11"x3"x0.5" approximately

If that size works for you, I can let you have a few. HDPE is easy to work with hand tools and it takes regular wood screws fairly well as long as you drill pilot holes first. I normally drill and tap it and then use machine screws though. The only drawback is that it is almost impossible to glue, but I've read about people using plastic welding to join pieces together.

It machines like a dream, though. I've used it to make a panel for a VFD (vacuum fluorescent display) by milling out a slot that only shows the text area and the green on black looks pretty good.

An update:

So, some searching around Michaels.com (thanks @lyndon!) lead me to the idea of plastic/acrylic collectors display boxes. They didn't have the size I need, but I looked on amazon for bigger boxes, and found that they make boxes for model cars that are about the right size. At that point, I hit myself over the head, as my boss literally has about 100 model cars, in these boxes, festooned around his office. In short, the answer has been staring me in the face since before I even started this project.

Boss is going to bring me some of his spares tomorrow, I'll post back with more info & hopefully pictures!
