Ice Tube Clock Doesn't Light

Postby Lud » Wed Apr 04, 2012 8:36 pm

I recently assembled my Ice Tube Clock and while assembling, it passed all the tests. But when I finally got to plug in my tube, it doesn't light. I checked it in the dark, nothing. It beeps when I apply power, and there are clicks when I press the buttons. I even blindly navigated the menu and changed the volume settings. So I know the processor is working. I attempted to increase each value of the menu options to increase the brightness but to no avail. I've checked all the voltages I saw people test for on the forums but I cannot figure out why mine isn't lighting. Is there something else I can check. The results of my voltage tests are below:

No VFD Chip:

IC3
Pin 1 (Closest to edge): 9.04v
Pin 2: 0.0v
Pin 3: 4.99v

Striped end of D3: 55.4v

R3 end closest to Q3: 4.72v

Q3
Pin 1 (Closest to edge): 4.72v
Pin 2: 0.0v
Pin 3: 4.72v

Q2
Bridged side: 9.03v

VFD Chip Inserted:

IC3
Pin 1 (Closest to edge): 9.03v
Pin 2: 0.0v
Pin 3: 4.99v

Striped end of D3: 14.2-14.6v

R3 end closest to Q3: 4.72v

Q3
Pin 1 (Closest to edge): 4.72v
Pin 2: 0.0v
Pin 3: 4.72v

Q2
Bridged side: 9.02v

I don't think I have any shorts, cold solder points, or misplaced components. I have uploaded pictures of my board here: http://imgur.com/a/HU9F8#0

Any help would be appreciated. I received this as a gift and I can't wait to show them it working.

Your soldering looks fine, and so do your voltage measurements. The processor is running and the boost and bias voltages are right where they should be. I suspect you have a damaged tube. That pretty much narrows it down to the tube or the vfd chip. If you have access to a scope we could look at the signals going to the tube pins. Otherwise, measure the voltage on the segment pins (pins 13-20 on JP2)

I don't have access to a scope. I'm not quite sure which exact pins I was supposed to measure, so I just measured them all. Here is the key: http://imgur.com/NdcNL.

Pin 01: 16 mV
Pin 02: 1.05 V
Pin 03: 15 mV
Pin 04: 15.8 mV
Pin 05: 14.1 mV
Pin 06: 14.8 mV
Pin 07: 11.1 mV
Pin 08: 1.43-1.49 V (This one wouldn't settle on a voltage)
Pin 09: 13 mV
Pin 10: 12.2 mV
Pin 11: 6.4 mV
Pin 12: 6.5 mV
Pin 13: 12.7 mV
Pin 14: 13.6 mV
Pin 15: 13.8 mV
Pin 16: 14.4 mV
Pin 17: 14.7 mV
Pin 18: 15.2 mV
Pin 19: 15.7 mV
Pin 20: 18.6 mV

Hmmm. You should be seeing something higher than the millivolt range. At the very least you should be seeing the 4.72v bias on pin 2. Are you sure you had the negative lead well grounded for the measurements?

I checked the voltages again and got the same thing. I don't know why Pin 2 is only 1.05 V.

The heater voltage does drop a bit with the tube in place, but it typically still measures above 3v. Contact support@adafruit.com for a replacement tube & end board and include a link to this thread.
