i want to make a headband out of the digital LED strip

Postby gdgarced » Mon Nov 14, 2011 2:02 am

Hello, i purchased the digital LED belt kit, but i want to make a head band and i want to make a dog collar. What supplies would i need to make these two items and how small can these LED strips be cut down and still be workable? Can i purchase 1 LED strip and cut it down for the 1 collar and 1 headband, and then purchase the other supplies needed to make the headband and collar like the battery pack, resisters, etc? Do you also have a strip that's just all white lights or do you only carry the LED strip with the different colored lights? i don't want to use the kit that i have, to make these items, i want to buy the supplies to make these two things. Thank you

how small can these LED strips be cut down and still be workable?

You can cut the strip at any point where you see the solder pads with the signal labels. The shortest workable strip would be 2-leds.
Can i purchase 1 LED strip and cut it down for the 1 collar and 1 headband, and then purchase the other supplies needed to make the headband and collar like the battery pack, resisters, etc?

Yes.
Do you also have a strip that's just all white lights

Yes, we have these, but they are not individually controllable as in the digital strips. You can dim the whole strip at once.

Hi, I know this is an older post but, I am working on getting to the headband. Question, can I use about 8 inches of the soft white strip with 1 or 2 coin cell batteries or do I have to use a 9 volt and how many? I want to keep my power supply light and small. I also want to make a dog collar and I want to also something light. The dog is a tiny 3lb dog so his neck is little. If I buy this, will I need any other supplies to create my collar and headband? If I order in the morning how long will it take for me to receive them? I'm in philly. Thank you

These are designed for 12v operation. But they will work at lower voltages with less brightness. At 9v they are still quite bright. At 6v they are noticeably dimmer. We do have compact =https://www.adafruit.com/products/7832 x 2032 coin-cell holders. You could use 1 for 6v or 2 for 12v. I would not expect very long run-times using coin cells.

If you order in the morning, your package will most likely go out the same day. We have several shipping options available at checkout.

hello, thank you for getting back to me, when i highlighted the http link that you posted it take me back to goggle and this posted question. can you check it out and send it again? Thanks, Im new to electronics so the battery and power that they put out is confusing at times. I design for pets and everything i make needs to be portable so if you can tell me what power supplies i can use i would be happy to purchase them. Thank You for your help. I'm really looking farward to making a dog collar with the rgb leds, I want to learn how to figure out what power supply to use for LEDs and resisters etc. They have different sizes and you have to use the right resister etc, I'm here to learn.

Not sure which link gave you trouble, but here they are:

http://www.adafruit.com/products/357
It would help if you could tell us what kind of run-times you need for the devices you are building. The problem with small power sources is that they do not have much capacity and will not run for very long.
