grab data up to three times a day

Postby bethesdakid » Sun Apr 29, 2012 7:38 pm

Two parts question
A) what program can adjust the input time daily.
Only need 2-6 data points a day for up to a week triggered by the clock to grab a serial digital input and store it along with time in the logger.

B) the date input is a temp/humidity sensor however there is no info on word length or start/stop bits. it is from Seeed Studio called Twig-Temp&Humidity Sensor part #SEN11301P dated 17 June 11 .
I would prefer to use it.

Other info: Mac dual core laptop, 2 Megs, OS 10.3.10. the plan is to first run a thermistor/ light sensor as shown in the 15 Oct 11 lighttemp design.

Oh Ohhh... dont have the SD card for FAT? I though Fat referred to a FAT table and that must be incorrect... do I need to buy it or can I breadboard what goes on it??? where do I find it?

What parts are you considering using? Part numbers and links would be helpful. Where do you plan to store the data, local or on the Mac?

I assume you are talking about the Data Logger shield.
What you describe should be possible with the shield. I am not familiar with that sensor, but Seeed Studio should be able to provide drivers and/or support for that.
I though Fat referred to a FAT table and that must be incorrect.

That is correct. The card must be formatted for a FAT file system. The cards we sell in the store are pre-formatted.

add a RTC and Flash to the Arduino for data storage?

Postby bethesdakid » Thu May 10, 2012 9:53 am

after programing with C++ examples, have found by counting seconds in a loop program a sensor can be activated daily, weekly or whatever. So, to make a small package can a flash drive be added for storage of data taken once a day? The flash, typically a usb thumb drive, can also be mounted on the board.

That would be helpful if the unit were inaccessable, yet a thumb drive connected outside the box. This way, when the box hard to get to, just switch thumb drives and check data at the office.

The DataLogger shield has a slot for an SD card. There is a prototyping area on the board for adding sensors. It also has a real-time clock so you don't have to count the seconds yourself!

Another option is the micro-SD breakout board.

reply to list sensors... two.... a temp/humidity module and a force sensor, either a strain gauge epoxied to a beam or two each of the wafer type, the ones that change resistance with normal directed force. The system, an Arduino, sensors, and a yet to be known part whose task is take data when called upon by a program comparing RTC time to send data and time through a female USB connector to a thumb drive outside the chamber where it is becomes recorded on the flash drive.

That is what is needed however for now a breadboard will use a logger shield and output through the normal USB cable that interfaces a MAC. Eventually, the object is to require the least amount of parts. There will be times in the "chamber" rocks will bust up or hot stuff will fry the poor little messenger that is trying to give collect sensor messages....

A USB thumb-drive would require USB hosting capability. A standard Arduino does not have host capability, but the Arduino Mega ADK does.

well... just assembled the logger shield. cant download the software to run it. The software is file downloaded from the "GitHub.app" My mac runs OS10.3 which cant open it!!! any suggestions on transferring programs from another source to check out and operate the logger for various sensor uses ???

Which files are you trying to download? You should be able to download the .zip file. Follow the instructions here to install the library: http://www.ladyada.net/library/arduino/libraries.html
