usb driver for WinXP fails - File not found

Postby mczoot » Thu Jul 19, 2007 11:08 am

I have built the USBtinyISP and tethered it to my pc running WinXP sp2 with green light success. Hardware is recognized and I follow the directions posted on the website exactly (as all users claim). However, the usb driver, downloaded 7/18, fails to install with a file not found error, but no specific file is mentioned.

The driver package contains 5 files:
    libusb0.dll
    libusb0.sys
    usbtinyisp.cat
    usbtinyisp.inf
    usbtinyisp_x64.cat

The usbtiny.inf file references other files like libusb0_x64.sys and dll. If I comment out those lines, the install puts the libusb0 .sys and .dll files in system32\drivers and concludes with the file not found error and a warning that the device may not work.

Is the distro complete? Any suggestions on what to try next?

Downloaded fresh driver, delete old files, extract new files. Now seven files with _x64 files present. Re-connected USBtinyISP device, ran install: same error.

Bahhhh to Windoz.

Executed age old Windows troubleshooting technique:
-Reboot
-Disabled Norton,
-Reconnect and install:
same error.

can you take a screenshot? also, try just copying those files to C:/windows/system32/drivers and click on "automatic install" if it needs a driver?

Sooooo, I have punted. I dragged out an old Win98 laptop and installed the driver. It also gives a file not found error but also seems to go ahead and install what it can and the device shows up in the device manager. I then installed SpokePOV v1.4 sw and voila - shesa speaking bits that both ends understand.

I tried putting all the files on the pentium machine in Windows/system32/drivers as suggested but all variations end in the same failure.

Not sure if I will continue troubleshooting this as my spiffy new macbook pro should be here in a couple of days. Then I am sure I will plague you with a whole suite of new questions.

Thanks for your VERY responsive and timely replies. I have no doubt I will be a long time customer. Keep up the creative hacking!
