Been thinking about building a SpokePOV. I'd like to use it on my motorcycle.
Do you think it could work. If not, why?

This has been a popular question, and asked a couple times. Some of the answers have been that the speeds that you ride a motorcycle would make it unsafe to connect a weight like this to the wheel, both for vibration and as a missile should it come loose. Or another comment has been that the "man" will hassel you for illegal lights, whereas you usually don't get hasseled by the "man" for riding your bicycle. I say its free country and warned ye be says I.

I'm not so much worried about the "man" :) or it flying off - I think I can tie it down safely - I was more concerned about whether it would work if it's going around so fast. Or does speed in RPMs not matter?

It should work fine, the microcontroller is more than powerful enough afaik.
Even if you can tie down the spokpov firmly enough, I don't fancy the idea of going to the emergency room with a duracell lodged somewhere in my jaw...

Ha ha! Point taken. Maybe I'll experiment with it on my bike first.
I do have a full face helmet though :)

Ever tried taking a bullet to the helmet since it'll be travelling around the same speed...

And what about the softer more delicate bits of you? lol

30 miles per hour = 44 feet per second

.22 rimfire cartridge 1200 - 1500 fps
.22 centerfire cartridge 2400 - 3000 fps
.22 Swift 4000 fps
.38 Special 600 fps
.221 Fireball 2650 fps

mikey = absolutely horrid at math

if your a dipshit and somehow magically end up DIRECTLY in the path of the spoke POV circuit board (This would involve an invisible fork scenario), you are looking at dealing with a minor scratch, unless you are lance banned armstrong with mini jetpacks attached to each foot and have god mode on

Works to 45 mph which is all I am really willing to go with a a flathead with drum brakes anyway.

The hard part is getting the software straightened out to work with the smaller "BMX" wheels.

Maybe the question is how fast can a properly strapped down spokePOV run without the batteries flying off.

On could always put the spoke POV units on the rear wheel of an older BMW (who's speedometer reads off of the rear wheel) put it on the center stand and run it up until the batteries fly off.

My guess, 60mph+

Now at least there is an answer to 45mph. If I go any higher without getting leveled by a flying energizer (ray-o-vac alkalines) I will post it, but I tru and keep it around 45.

This is the very reason I found the lady in the first place.

I would do the following:
Add a waterproof conformal coating
Do away with the batteries and use a slip ring (brushes or some such) to give it _regulated_ power from the bike's charging system
Wire it permanently on and put the on/off switch inline with the power supply wiring

All of this would make it permanent, waterproof, safer, easier to use, and have a lower moment of inertia so it would upset wheel balance less. Not sure if I want to be the first to do this, as I am spread pretty thin with projects (cars, motorcycle, house, Megasquirt, superchargers, 2 jobs, etc.) so let me know how it turns out!
