hi folks,
I am building mine with all ics and trannies socketed and going to experiment with many different parts, I'm not really interested in an exact clone anyhoo as I plan to add more to it later.

This transistor is the only part that is hard/expensive to buy other than the BA6110 OTA eveything else i have found rather cheap. But you can buy these trannies in bulk however you have to sort them by measuring hfe the F is about 160-320, in bulk you will get alot of rejects but you can buy them in the 100's at less than .10 a piece, and i am not sure if it will matter. I also bought NTE85 and 2SC945 as well, so i am going to try mixing and matching and see what results.

Anyways, I'll let you know how it goes when I start getting to work on it, I am going to try lots of stuff and see what matters the most where, all the other parts I have found easily.

hi,
i've looked through the forum and found all the replacement part suggestions, so I had read that the 2sc945p is also a possible replacement, and NTE makes a trannie that is a replacement for it as well, however the NTE parts are more expensive then the originals at mouser! And they aren't exactly the same they are a bit different. The cheapest I could find 2SC536f was for around $1.10 each, and I am going to order them. Other than that I have found all the other parts fairly easily however I don't know what kind of volume they have and also a few parts were out of stock at different places. I have not got my pcb yet but I ordered the parts beforehand and have been going through the 2sc536s, out of 170 or so I have 24 with hfe between 160 and 320, so i will try them. But I am socketing everything which will allow me to plug n play with components ;-)

Yepp. Works like a charm in my second x0x.

edit: here you'll find some samples of both of my boxes. x0x #1 with 536f and x0x #2 with 945p. Both x0xes have a 733k for the square wave, and x0x #2 has high beta 733ps in the filter section. But there were no changes necessary in the circuitry because of the replacement transistors.

well i didnt mean to clutter up the site with MORE posts about the rare parts but it wasn't only about rare parts but also that I am socketing all the semiconductors so I can try out many different things.

I wonder how bad manufacturing was in the 80s, if it was as bad as like in the 60s ;-) I would think these parts in a real 303 would be from the same batch and all pretty close... but I built some fuzz pedals using germanium transistors and it was a nightmare to find one suitable but now they have places like Small bear who will match them for you for a small fee. I am going to see where it matters the most and i enjoy building kits and this one is good. Sadly I was on the list back in 2004 but I moved and forgot the password to the email I used so I never got my kit. Sorry Ladyada

that is nice comparison you did, there is definitely a difference, the 2s945p is much more 'squelchy' sounding, people who say transistors don't sound different, you have proof that they do now ;-) I have told people many times there is a difference but they laugh ahahah you are a crazy, I'm like whatever it is true.

Hmmmm... I'm not too sure about that. The 536f isn't the only part that runs the whole show so I wouldn't say the 945p alone is the reason for the sound difference between my to x0xes. The only way to find this out would be to take a x0x with 536f and all of these with 945p.

I thought that demo was one with 536f and one with 945p? Well that is what im going to do ;-) Everything is being socketed. I have everything, the only thing I could not find was a BA662.

ok i just put in orders for 2sc536f and 2sc945p so hope they are in stock, now I have everything plus lots of extras to try out ;-)

Is the BA662A pretty much impossible to find now? OTA do have effect on sound I prefer CA3080 over LM13600, much warmer sounding to me but then I am a crazy and hear differences in transistors so.. ;-)

just get a 6110, theres no difference apart from that its about 4db hotter on the 6110, checkout subatomics tests

I can not locate a 662 anywhere so I had to get a 6110.

heh, yeh, I spent extra money on different parts to test which arent necessary but I will try to use them for other projects when I am done but I dont care I didnt lose much money however tbh the rare parts are really not the expensive part of building this thing.

i got one out of a boss cs-2

it also had 3 2SK30A-Y transistors

AhahaAAHHH you kilt a Boss CS-2!!! They arent really good compressors anyways but that gives me an idea I have some old boss pedals somewhere.
