Troubleshooting Question

The operation of transmitters designed to jam or block wireless communications is a violation of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended ("Act"). See 47 U.S.C. Sections 301, 302a, 333. The Act prohibits any person from willfully or maliciously interfering with the radio communications of any station licensed or authorized under the Act or operated by the U.S. government. 47 U.S.C. Section 333. The manufacture, importation, sale or offer for sale, including advertising, of devices designed to block or jam wireless transmissions is prohibited. 47 U.S.C. Section 302a(b). Parties in violation of these provisions may be subject to the penalties set out in 47 U.S.C. Sections 501-510. Fines for a first offense can range as high as $11,000 for each violation or imprisonment for up to one year, and the device used may also be seized and forfeited to the U.S. government.

Troubleshooting Question

Ok so I managed to fix the 2-way communication problem. The solder joint on the serial out com pin looked fine, but apparently it wasn't  . Now I have full access to the internal menu. I have tried to tune the suggested 1.9 Ghz freq and that's where I run into problems. The wierd thing is the problem seems intermittent, and I am not really sure where to look for it. The first time I tried it, I got RF VCO range is too high! Then after reheating all the solder joints on both VCOs the first VCO went through the tuning process with no problems but then I got IF VCO range too low!(I think it was too low) Then I reheated the solder joints and broke the first one again (doh). Eventually I tried resoldering some suspect looking joints on the pll chip. This worked... at first. I got the following output:

PLL for RF freq 1950MHz & prescaler 8: B=243 A=6

midpoint @1

bandwidth tuning...
PLL for RF freq 1900MHz & prescaler 8: B=237 A=4
238 done!
PLL for RF freq 850MHz & prescaler 8: B=106 A=2
midpoint @54

bandwidth tuning...
PLL for RF freq 800MHz & prescaler 8: B=100 A=0
20 done!

Now first of all, I was pretty happy that it seemed to be working. I restarted the device and tried to tune a new program... except now I got the RF VCO range too high! error again... except I didn't do anything save for turn on and off the power. I tried to tune the program that had just worked... RF VCO range too high! Looking back at the output I realized the numbers ### done! on my wave bubble do not match ladyadas which makes me think there is an error somewhere else in the system and the tuning process was able to work through it only by digi pot settings that differ from what they should be. Appreciate the help.
