USB boarduino soldering instructions?

Postby Matt » Tue May 20, 2008 7:43 pm

I just noticed that there are not any soldering instructions for the USB Boarduino. Are the instructions going to be posted by the time the kits are back in stock?

Nothing tricky in the other 1% I hope? I think my USB Boarduino kit is either waiting for me at home or coming tomorrow :)

I assembled my USB Boarduino last night. Nothing too tricky. In fact, I found it much easier to refer just the parts list instead of the step-by-step instructions and just to use a little common sense on the order to put things on.

hints (until sloldering instructions are up)

in lieu of assembly instructions, the parts list will clarify which components go where. the only part i missed was the jumper, which is labeled 'PWR' on the pcb just behind the usb connector. the photo can be referred to in a pinch.

yes, all the info one needs is there, assuming an intermediate level of experience or better. but there are a few head-scratchers if you try to put it together w/o using the parts list or photo.

For others that wind up seeking this thread:

As the poster above said, the power jumper may not be obvious. I'm fairly technically inclined and I missed it. I just assumed it was designed in for some future use. Of course, when my board wouldn't light up like everyone else's I became suspicious. Gotta connect it.

For noob builders, your best bet is to use the parts list and extrapolate where they all go. If you go by the DC tutorial, note that d1 was eliminated on the usb version so d2 becomes d1 and d3 becomes d2. Also note that the six pin piece that goes by the reset button has the long pins up so you can jumper them. (still havent figured out what to use those for tho)

Seems like a little photo copy of a populated board and a few relevant notes would be included but I guess that would make it too easy... Just pretend you went to banned and enjoy puzzles. Dont stress!

The "six pin piece" is not for jumpering, but to plug an ISP (In-System Programmer - such as the Adafruit USBtinyISP) into.

I just finished (finally) soldering mine up, and notice there are some unpopulated holes. One is right by the 4 in the C4 silk screen, and there are 3 under the large socket. Did I miss something? I sure hope not...

I'm not familiar with the "USB" version of the Boarduino, but it sounds like those are just vias: pass-throughs to electrically connect a circuit trace on the top side to one on the bottom side. Are they a wee bit smaller than the other (soldered) holes?

Yes, and the pads are smaller, too.

yup those are vias, they're too small for parts, they're used to pass electricity thru the PCB

not to be a total newb, but I would prefer the soldering instructions.

and i am missing the R1 10k ohm 1/4w 5% resistor ? (BROWN,BLACK,ORANGE,GOLD)
or am i ? is this another "overlooked" part that is not needed but included in the online
parts list ?

also

I purchased the USB boarduino (Arduino cloine) kit w/ATmega328
and a usb cable.

will i need anything else to communicate/program this thing ?

if you didnt receive a 10K resistor at all then its missing
the good news is...its not actually necessary :)
try building it without the 10k
it will work fine. with just the usb cable
