What command are you using to program, and what is the error?

Ignorance

I am just trying to get it to communicate through the serial port. Trying to teach this old dog new tricks. I am having a tough time finding documentation.

http://www.ladyada.net/make/minipov3/so ... html#linux

Thats probably going to be your biggest help.

Edit the Makefile in the minipov directory to change the AVRDUDE_PORT to /dev/cuaa0, /dev/ttyS0, /dev/ttyUSB0, /dev/cu.KeySerial1 or /dev/cu.usbserial or whatever you're using. (Check your distribution docs for info on what the serial ports are called!)

Since you run Ubuntu, you want to use /dev/ttyS0 if you are plugging the miniPOV into a serial port (/dev/ttyS1 if your computer's COM1 port is already in use, which is unlikely for modern PC's). If you are using a USB-Serial converter cable, use /dev/ttyUSB0.

Also, don't forget to check all solder connections for breaks and bridges, and make sure the MiniPOV's battery pack is on when you try to communicate.

I can see it but now I get errors, do i still do the make-program like in the instructions.

I was delighted to switch to Linux about 5 years ago. But I am 53, trying to keep my mind active.......

Thanks for the help now I get an error 1

I believe error 1 says that it can't find the AVR device. Make sure all of your solder connections are good, the chip is installed the correct way, and the battery pack is on when you try to program.

A while back, I posted this. Maybe it can be of *some* help.
