Vary LED Brightness

Postby bea788 » Tue Dec 16, 2008 6:55 pm

Is there anyway to individually adjust the brightness of an LED at a certain time in the cycle and all? I know given everything in the kit it is not possible but what if a DAC(Digital to Analog Controller) or a PWM(Pulse Width Modulator) was added or something?

What I am trying to get at is instead of using 30 LEDs, use 10 RGB LEDs on the SpokePOV, which would then give 8 color options unless there was some way to vary the how much current/voltage is going to each individual part of the RGB LEDs, and then possibly you could get the full 256 colors of an RGB LED.

SpokePOV could feasibly do PWM. The uC is plenty fast enough, but it would require some re-engineering of the i/o, and storing less banks or lower resolution images. This is on my to-do list, along with a bunch of other changes I am making.

You could probably do the PWM thing but you'd need to work with images stored entirely in the memory of the uC. I think it would be to slow to read the EEPROM and do PWM. I've done some experiments with this and to date haven't been that jazzed with the results.
