Need enclosure/case help (extruded aluminum)

Postby octelcogopod » Fri Mar 06, 2009 2:44 pm

Can anyone help me identify this enclosure? It's extruded aluminum, with internal fins for inserting PCBs. It has removable plastic sides and a removable aluminum top panel.

I'm trying to mod this synth, but I need to either find an identical (or similar) enclosure or get a blank panel so I can drill my own holes. The enclosure has no manufacturer markings or logos :(

I know these photos suck, and I can post more detailed ones when I get home. I was just wondering if anyone knew offhand what kind of enclosures these are.

It looks like the panel is just a piece of sheet aluminum, probably 1/16". That would be easy to source. Easy to cut out the size you need.

I'm trying to get a wider version of this enclosure too.
Here is an actually helpful photo:

Image

Left side: 61mm tall (measuring at the tallest part)
Right side: 41mm tall (I'm measuring right at the corner, so this is the shortest possible height on that side)

The thickness of the PCB is ~1.8mm and it fits into the slots perfectly.

So my question is: is this a standard type of enclosure? if so, what is it called and where can it be purchased?

I will guess it is a custom or semi-custom extrusion. There are about a zillion extrusion companies in the world and anyone making a product in quantity can have an extrusion designed. There are some stock extrusions around but mostly it is done on a custom basis. Rose-bopla has some available but none open face like that. And they sell them by the meter and you have to cut it, or pay them to. If you are making one then you are stuck with a stock enclosure of some kind. For small qty runs you can design a sheet metal box and get it stamped, bent, painted, screened. Fairly reasonable once you get to 100 pcs or so.

That looks a lot like the extruded enclosures from Hammond, although I haven't found any on their site that aren't square, so maybe that's a custom? Do you explicitly need the slanted top?

Anyway, try here:
