XOXBOX 173 - Show and tell :)

Postby CoolColJ » Sun Feb 05, 2006 11:21 pm

Well I finally have my unit 173 here, been playing it for a week now. So much fun!

I have to say, this unit with it's mods, is much better value than any real 303. It does quite a bit for the money. And it sounds pretty close to me, with the high beta transistors mine has, and the Power Supply unit mod.

I've had quite a few mods done to it.

visually the LEDS have been changed - I tried to get all of em to show, which it does sometimes on power up. But I get different combo of LEDS coming on each time :o
Anyone have this as well?

The back panel shows some of the mods - the top part of the back.
Left to right -
1) on/off switch added
2) hole to adjust the trimpot for the power supply warble mod. Goes from stock to 220R. Set in the middle it sounds closest to a 303. Left in stock it sounds a bit closer, edgey, and tighter, resonance not as nice. Set to the extreme, the sounds go more rubbery and mellow, the resonance band gets more noticeable/wider like a Juno 106....
3) switch to turn on/off the envelope modulation extra range. Very handy, you can do some sounds you can't get on a normal 303.
4) empty switch, didn't end up using it to switch a mod
5) turns the VCO on/off. Very useful for the filter input mod
6) jack for the filter input - very handy for filtering stuff, that you sequence over CV/Gate to add the accent and 303 vibe. Or just filter patterns when running the sequencer without the VCO etc

Image

Mods that you can't see -
1) Bass boost - drop the high pass filter down an ocatve. Hmm sounds much thicker, gives my Minimoog and Sh2 a run for the bass money :)
2) High beta transitors for the VCO and Filter
3) allow the Env mod to be set to zero
4) wider filter cutoff range, goes from subsonic to near ultrasonic now

I'll have some audio clips next to show off some of the mods and what my Minimoog and SH2 sound like when sequenced over CV/Gate by it, and then run through the filter input! 8)

something I didn't know, all the random, keyboard and mid play modes, send out notes to the CV/Gate and Midi to I think! So I guess it can be used a simple CV/Gate keyboard or Midi to CV/Gate...

ok some simple mp3s to start - a few are quite long

a quick jam of my Box. You can here some of the mods in action, things a standard unit or 303 can't do :)

played from it's own keyboard, sounds pretty nice, warm and mellow, nice portamento too. From midi is the same except you get accent on louder notes. I wish the decay could be sustained longer sometimes.
Yeah as I said before it sends out the notes to CV/Gate as well, worked well with my Minimoog :)
You can hear the extra ENV mod range working here

The Minimoog sequenced over CV/Gate from the unit. Halfway through I add the X0X ontop as well

Now the Minimoog sequenced but run through the XOX's filter input. First you hear the XOX's VCO by itself, then I mix in the Mini's VCO, then i turn off the XOX's VCO and the fun begins. Now anything can be acidfied ^_^

I'll do the Sh2 next - PWM acid...! :)

GOOD GOD!

That third link is ungodly. BUBBLES, I gotta figure out how to get mine to do that...

ahem that's a Minimoog sequenced from the X0X :)
but there is some X0X ontop halfway through
I think it's just the right combo of settings

the X0X sounds more bubbly when you do the power supply mod and use the higher values. Mine is ona trimpot and at maximum 220r it is more rubbery sounding, and resonance wetter, but less cutting
I'll do a mp3 showing the differences

here is a comapro of the Power Supply Warble mod trimpot settings - goes from stock to 220R at full

It starts with 50% resonance, then sweeping the cutoff, set to 75% res, sweep and then 100% res sweep on each setting - stock, 50% trimpot and then full trimpot

http://www.members.optushome.com.au/bli ... f_full.mp3

stock sounds pretty dead, 50% is a bit fuller and more aggressive, full setting sounds the sweetest and liquidy to me, more rubbery.

so far all my mp3s have been on the 50% setting.

since I have a filter input on the unit, and a headphone out, I thought I tried the Minimoog trick of connecting a jack from the headphone output to the filter input for some feedback....

and boom it works - I can drive the resonance higher and into self -oscillation! The sound changes a little bit too, some bottom drops out, but the it becomes more liquidy and the filter can self-oscillate at higher resonance settings. Interestingly enough it reacts the same as the Minimoog filter, it won't self-oscillate at low cutoffs....
The accent also spikes the resonance up, so if you set it up right you can just make it chirp on the accents.

Much easier doing this for more resonance than futzing with the resonance mods IMO :)

first the stock filter (trim pot at max) , then with the feedback hooked up, I turn the VCO off in places etc

SH2 sequenced and run through the X0X
totally different charatcer to the Minimoog! They usually can sound pretty similar on their own, but somehow the waveforms + filter run through the X0X changes big time.

A lot more edgey and raspy interaction with the 303 filter. I noticed the same thing with the Syntecno filter, the SH2 sounded so aggressive through that!

BTW with the LEDs, the blue seems to be the most visible in any light condition or angle

follwed by the red. The yellow and green are harder to see from low angles and where there is a lot of light. But you can always see them if your directly above

MEH! :D

SH2 sub-oscillator has a very ominous sounding square tone!

----

MY XOX has the bass boost mod, lowers HPF down an octave sound it has a fuller and beefier tone. For that more cutting and blatty tone of the original I engage the 80 hertz high pass on my mixer. I think it sounds more like a real 303 when used like this, the edge of the filter gets more emphasised. Changes the character a lot. I like having the flexibility to choose, which sound I want.

clip of this in action with a nice driving and grooving sequence! First part is my bass boosted unit. Then I restart it with the high pass filter on the mixer kicked in, and after that I put it up an octave for a taste of a more lead line type sound.

Just love the blats and dribbles! *hugs XOX tightly* :)
