pitch of the ft232 chip?

Postby Brandon Daniel » Fri Mar 11, 2005 11:48 pm

I can handle thru-hole stuff OK, but the surface mount part has me a bit worried. I can rope in the gf for that if it's not too fine a pitch, does anyone know what it is?

I believe the chip has a 0.8 mm pitch (32LD LQFP format). See http://www.ladyada.net/make/x0xb0x/fab/ ... index.html for some hints on soldering, and similarly the "soldering considerations" at the bottom of this page: http://www.mellowparenting.demon.co.uk/ ... sbdac.html
I'm a bit intimidated myself by the prospect of working on the small surface mount stuff.

well it is a fine pitch...but its also one of the last things you'll solder. assuming you have the proper tools, you'll find that by the time you get to it, it'll be a lot easier than it seems now.
also, you dont -have- to solder that chip in. its for USB and USB is not necessary for the synth to work!

Thanks for the info, if I send the GF to work to do it, she should be able to handle that pitch with the tools there.
