Just built a Boarduino but not working

Postby DarrenG » Sun Mar 07, 2010 1:59 pm

Just built a Boarduino. I managed to place the C5 capacitor in the D2 position so had to unsolder that but apart from that mistake the power up test half way through went fine and the rest of the build went smoothly.

But it's not working :( When I apply 9v power I get the green LED lit but the red LED blinks at approx 2sec intervals. Holding the reset button stops the red LED blinking.

When I attempt to upload the Blink sketch (I'm using the FTDI USB cable) I get the following error:

avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding

I've double checked all the soldered joints and all look sound. I wondered if the flashing red LED might indicate an obvious issue? Or have I fried the capacitor when I unsoldered it? Or maybe I have a faulty FTDI cable although given the red LED blinking on 9v power I don't think that's an issue.

are you sure you have the right COM port selected? and the right device from the dropdown? it should be a 328 duemilanove

Yes, i'm on a Mac and have a standard Duemilanove 328 which works.

Board set to Arduino Demilanove or Nano w/ ATmega328, and port is /dev/cu.usbserial-FTETXVCQ when I'm using the FTDI cable.

The board's red LED is blinking when 9v power is applied (no FTDI cable) which isn't right is it?

thats correect, the bootloader is waiting. you could check your soldering, make sure you've got the right board selected...
if you're not sure you soldered it correctly, post a clear photo & we'll look!

As I said in the OP, I managed to misplace the C5 capacitor in the D2 position when I was distracted but desoldered and moved. Could this have fried the capacitor, might that explain the symptoms?

In the meantime I'll grab a photo and post back!

so you plug in the FTDI cable, and also power it with 9V
when you press reset, the LED does some fast blinking
and when you try to upload, does the LED act the same way as when you reset?

Ah, this may all be down to a misunderstanding of mine then  I didn't realise I needed 9v power applied when using the FTDI cable to upload?

Have just tried the Blink Sketch with 9v power applied and it has uploaded without error. The FTDI cable has a 5v line so should it be able to power the Boarduino and I'd thought it would?

If that is all the issue was then I feel like a real idiot but at least my soldering wasn't the cause :)

That's what the power select jumper is for.

Doh! Thanks all and apols for being such a dumbass. Sorry, although it is obvious now, I hadn't realised that the jumper needed to be changed to allow the FTDI to provide power.

Thanks again and lesson learned!

If you hadn't of made this mistake and been back here to tell us you'd fixed it... I did the EXACT same thing.

I had tried everything! Thanks
