$250 to solve an iPad charging issue

Postby tanguero » Mon Aug 09, 2010 2:46 pm

Hello.
I routinely charge the iPad through their 30-pin to USB (A) cable connected to an iPad 10watt charger.
Works great.
I now need to charge the iPad through the Apple DOC Camera connector (the USB output, not the Flash chip output) to the Apple 10w charger.
I have tried it and it does not work.
If you can show me how to make this work, I will pay you $250.
Please respond via diagram, text and cell-camera video.
Thanks.

That will not work. Don't try to make it work. The iPad may be damaged.

The USB port is in host mode when the camera connection kit is used. It is configured to supply power, not to accept power.

Bump

I bought a ipad data cable and hooked up a usb from the apple original charger. The iPad charges until I connect the Camera Kit.
I read some place that to charge the iPad you need to connect some resistance (is this right, i'm not a native english speaker) but that would interfere with the usb data sent over the same cable ....
Anyway ..if anyone has any idea on how can this be done I'd also pay $250 ($500 if you count tanguero in)

ps. check out the attachment to get an idea / femina is female, maschi is male (italian)

oPossum had it right: Connecting the camera connecter makes the iPad not charge - it isn't designed to do both things at once.

The thing is I need to connect something over usb to the ipad and at the same time charge the iPad.
The camera kit has some nasty stuff inside ...duplicating one is out of the question.
Any idea? Anyone?

What is it you need to connect over USB to the iPad while charging?

A usb barcode reader. See my first post in this thread and check out the attachment.
(no, I can't connect a bluetooth barcode reader)

I don't want to be rude but ...
oPossoum/snipeye do you know for certain that you can't recharge the iPad over the Camera Kit?
I mean, you have some inside knowledge of how the iPad handles the camera kit?

Thank you

The camera connector kit, when torn down, reveals that pins 25 and 27 are in use. These are 2 of the 3 USB data lines - the USB power lines are not in use. However, even if you attach +5v to USB Vin, and ground it via pin 1 or 2, it will still try to check the USB data lines to see what kind of charger is attached. Since the camera connector kit is attached, it won't work. Even if you hooked up the USB data lines to your charger, it would send the signal out in parallel to both the charger and the camera connector kit, and that could return some really... interesting results.

The absolute dirtiest hack I can think of that MIGHT make it work is to put a switch on the USB data lines connecting to the iPad Camera Connector kit, and turn them off. Then, attach the charger, with the correct data lines, so it starts charging, then flip the switch the the Camera connector kit is connected to the USB data lines again - even then, it might stop charging because of weird voltages across the data lines, or it may damage the iPad, charger, etc - we just don't know for sure what would happen.

The CCK also uses the accessory sense line to identify itself, and the serial lines to configure the USB port. Manipulating the D+/D- lines only is unlikely to do anything useful and at best would only allow switching between charging and using USB host mode.

The solution to USB host and charging might be in the keyboard dock. Has anyone tried to hack this thing?

Cheers,

I'm in the same boat trying to charge the iPad while it's connected to a barcode scanner via the camera kit. Really, really would like to get something to work - any hack good enough. Any/all guidance appreciated.

@mikehai

It's not technically possible ...in the end I used a Bluetooth barcode scanner (don't recall the exact brand/model).
The scanner is set to automatically connect to the ipad when on/in range and the iPad is always connected to the charger.

Sorry :(

@tagyro - I'm using the socket 7x bluetooth scanner but it is not fast enough for my application. For sure for sure?
