New Arduino Uno: programmer is not responding

Postby francis » Wed Oct 20, 2010 11:15 pm

Hey guys,
I recently ordered two new Arduino Unos. One was part of the Experimentation Kit, which I have been using with no problems and absolutely love. The other Arduino Uno was part of a Starter Pack which I gave to a friend as a birthday present. When he unpacked it and gave it a try he received the "avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding" error when trying to load the Blink example sketch. He brought it to me and I tried to load a sample sketch using my setup (which works perfectly with my identical Arduino Uno). No luck. The L, tx, and rx LEDs show activity but I get exactly the same error message.

Nothing aside form the usb cable is connected to the board. I've tried the reset button before loading the sketch, and I've tried restarting my computer. Again, everything works flawlessly with one Uno, and the other one gives the error.

I'm running IDE 0021 on Ubuntu 10.10.

You guys are the experts. What is your assessment?

Thanks!
francis

The LEDs show activity as you attempt to load a sketch? Or only on first connection?
Does your computer recognize the USB/Serial port?
Be aware that your computer may assign a different COM port to the second board - even if you plug it in to the same USB port. Have you selected the correct port in the IDE?

After plugging the board in type "dmesg" in a terminal window and look for something like this:

[19457.850014] usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
[19458.343987] cdc_acm 3-2:1.0: ttyACM0: USB ACM device
[19458.346341] usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_acm
[19458.346344] cdc_acm: v0.26:USB Abstract Control Model driver for USB modems and ISDN adapters

This will tell you the port it is assigning, in this case "/dev/ttyACM0". I'm assuming you are using the Arduino IDE. If so, only valid ports will show up as options under "Serial Port". Hope this helps...

Yes, it's the correct com port. I've verified it in the logs, and you can see the tx and rx leds blinking while it's trying to upload the sketch. They're talking to each other for sure, but the IDE says the programmer is not responding.

Code: Select all
cdc_acm 2-2:1.0: ttyACM0: USB ACM device

Sounds like you might have a bad one there. Contact support@adafruit.com and reference this thread.

I'm having a similar problem with my new Arduino UNO (SHIFT/upload for verbose)
Using Port : /dev/ttyACM0
Using Programmer : arduino
Overriding Baud Rate : 115200
avrdude: Send: 0 [30] [20]
avrdude: Send: 0 [30] [20]
avrdude: Send: 0 [30] [20]
avrdude: ser_recv(): programmer is not responding
avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding

On the UNO I see three blinks of the RX then about three seconds pass with no TX activity. Finally L blinks twice and the CIRC05 program resumes.

This after a week or so of absolutely no problems.

I reloaded arduino, etc. which didn't help.

Also, I can't seem to reset the board -- power off, then hold RESET while power on -- has no effect, the CIRC05 program restarts.

Appreciate any thoughts on this.

did you take out the atmel chip? seems like if you place pin1 to pin15 position then it doesn't work.

I had the same problem with my board diecimila. I changed in file board.txt
from
diecimila.upload.protocol=arduino
to
diecimila.upload.protocol=stk500

and problem disappeared.

For Arduino Uno try change
from
uno.upload.protocol=arduino
to
uno.upload.protocol=stk500
Good luck
