does the sim reader works if the sim is disconnected?

hi from Nicaragua, <first sorry for my grammar>I just bought the sim car reader kit, but the owner of the sim that I want to check with the reader seems to call the operator "claro" and disconned the sim, at least that what I think because when insert the the sim into my cellphone the screen shows "disconnected" in the part where it should say CLARO.

sometimes you can find deleted SIMs, it depends on the phone
