Soldering temperature & tip cleaning

Which temperature do you use for a general soldering?
How do you clean your solder tips?

I use ~330°C on Lafayette SDD-9 and I clean the tips only with wet soft sponge

330 - 350 on the Xytronic 379 and a brass "scrubby". Rarely use a wet sponge. Not sure why.

On the bench, usually about 370 C (700 F) with a brass cleaning 'sponge'. In the field I use a damp rag or paper towel for cleaning.

For lead-free work, I usually boost the tip temperature up to 725-750F. (385-400C).

It isn't too hot?

The tip needs to be substantially hotter than the melting point of the solder in order to heat the whole joint to melting temperature quickly. If it takes too long to make the joint, the components themselves can overheat to the point of damage.

I run mine at about 350-370°C for most work, and bump it up to around 400°C if I need to.

I don't use lead-free solder.

Cleaning I do with a damp sponge. Never tried one of those brass cleaners, might give one a go sometime.
