Small Solar Panels + Usb Solar Charger

by vgvallee on Fri Mar 30, 2012 3:11 pm

I'm trying to have 3 small solar panels (http://www.adafruit.com/products/262) wired in parallel to plug into the usb solar charger (http://www.adafruit.com/products/390). I did some research on the Internet and from what (I think) I understood, because of the small nature of those panels, I would not need to protect them from reverse current.

Can anyone confirm that?

If I do need to place a diode in front, can anyone suggest a part?

Thanks,
Vince

Blocking diodes are not just to protect against damage. They prevent reverse current flow and associated inefficiencies in the event that one or more panels is shaded. If you go that way, use schottky diode for minimum voltage drop.

But, you will get more power out of a single large panel for the same price.

Ok, thanks... The reason for the 3 panels is the dimensions work better. I would have needed a larger panel that's 3 inches by 15-20 inches.
