Errors!

Post by insignia96 »

I am having some problems programming my MiniPOV3 on Windows XP.

FIRST: From a kit.
SECOND: Windows XP SP3 on an AMD Quad-Core
THIRD: Adapter (GARMIN Usb to RS-232 converter)
FOURTH: Yes, it works perfectly when i turn it on.
FIFTH:I followed the
SIXTH: Well, either i get a screen that shows the avrdude parameters then it irreversibly crashes my computer and i have to restart OR it says something along the lines of SetCommSomething() Will get pics and ss in a bit.
SEVENTH: I have studied all the connections and can see no reason for error, will take pics l8r.

I don't know if this helps, but i made sure i had the correct drivers for my serial converter and found newer ones. now i am just getting the:

error. The classic.

Also, if it helps, i have found that the First LED on the board will light up solid, as the LINK led on my converter blinks. Then after a bit (i have the dasa delay set to 5000) it says the error.

focus on the board pictures is not too good.

some of the solder joints look kind of blobby. could be cold joints which could be causing the initialization failure. reheating some of those joints so the solder flows properly can't hurt.

best way to photograph boards is straight down. back off a ways and use both macro and zoom.

Sorry about the pics, i have my other camera now, so i will try the reheating and take some more pics. The AutoFocus on that camera is very messed up. Will post back in a bit.

EDIT: After closer inspection on the board myself, there are no solder bridges but there are big beads of solder on almost every diode and a few resistors. I am going to see if i can make the solder flow better.

EDIT2: I fixed the beads, however the device still will not respond. A note that may also be helpful is that I lost one Zener diode. Because I needed the project by a deadline, I did not look for it much, I just popped over to RadioShack and picked up a 5.1V Zener diode that I put in. I later found the diode and switched them out. I don't know if the RadioShack diode did anything to the Microcontroller because I did attempt to program it a few times with the RS zener diode in. Also I have checked and all diodes are soldered in correctly.

well, does it still work.

the diode value sounds good, but if d1 or d2 had blown a pin led 8 or led 6 would no longer work.

pictures in focus might still be helpful.

All LEDs light up correctly and the message that came pre-programmed with the kit is clearly visible

here are 2 more pics, they are more infocus and are taken after I fixed the beads.

are you using the delay'd stuff for USB-serial converters? you have to put in like a 5000 delay, etc. ?
