MIDI sysex dump/load patterns?

Post by Sokkan »

I am thinking of adding sysex capability to SokkOS, ie dumping and loading patterns via MIDI instead of using the not so useful c0ntr0l software.

Would this be a preferred method over fixing c0ntr0l so that it works?

The advantages of using sysex dumps:

* making it possible to automatically load new patterns during a performance by inserting sysex-messages into the sequencer
* device ID functionality to load different patterns into several different x0xb0xes
* no need to get USB working
* no need for driver installation into computer with the hassles involved in that
* scrapping c0ntr0l altogether

The disadvantages of using sysex dumps:

* might be slow
* one probably needs to load/dump all of the patterns at once
* manufacturer ID needed(costs $200 annually)

I would probably use Rolands manufacturer ID or some other now defunct manufacturers since I don't want to shell out 200 bucks every year for a hack and I definitely won't expect ladyada to do so for stuff not delivered by them. (See http://www.midi.org/techspecs/manid.php)
The number of devices per MIDI chain will probably be limited to 8, to be able to use the key numbered 1-8 to set it in MIDI mode.
(This should really not be a problem... :D )

Any more thoughts or ideas?

sysex mem dump would be simply awesome, i think you'd want at minimum complete mem dump and if theres space single bank and single pattern dump as well

So few responses for such a great feature. I really don't like the control software and adding sysex dump/load functionality would also create possibilities for writing our own pattern editor for the x0xb0x. That is, if the sysex specifications are documented.

I would be very interested in this! Currently, I have to record the patterns to MIDI and then manually enter them. Sysex for load / store of patterns would be super useful simply for archiving purposes. If my x0x dies, my whole show is dead. Also, I have friends that would like to share x0x patches with me.

Even though i finally found the right procedure to use my Mac with the x0xb0x for dumps i really would like to see this option for a easier way to do it. :)
