yes, the firmware is a .hex file
and you can flash it via USB (assuming the x0x has the bootloader) using an app like c0ntr0l, BANNED, maybe avrdude

your patterns are on a sepparate EEPROM, they will not be erased
however, it never hurts to make a backup of your patterns

yep, i'm trying to upload firmware for the first time:

windows (vista32) is asking for drivers, and i see an FTDI zip i downloaded
but not sure how to install, or if it is valid for vista32 since last OS it mentions
is w2k.

i have c0ntr0l (c0ntr0l_v1.0Eil.r10_Win32), doesn't seem to do much so far,
and various firmwares - thinking of sokkos2-

vista says it can't find what it needs in the FTDI package i have, so where do
i find the correct package? thanks.

is there an initialize x0x routine?

try these: http://www.ftdichip.com/FTDrivers.htm

IIRC, it's the VCP ones you want (virtual com port)
