square wave mod (pw) updated version

by phono on Fri Jul 04, 2008 3:49 pm

updated this now so i've edited this post with the simpler and better version. Audio examples soon

this mod was inspired by the info in this thread

http://www.ladyada.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6240

parts needed

100k linear pot
toggle switch
some wire

rather than replacing the resistor on the board i used the parallel resistor method, so first locate where R45 is on the switch side (top side of pcb when x0x is assembled)

solder a wire to each node of the resistor then and attach one lead to the middle leg of your 100k pot. Then take another length of wire and solder one end to either free leg of the 100k pot (depending on which way you want to turn it to increase the amount of pwm. either leg will do) solder the other end of the wire to middle leg of your toggle.

Now take the other wire from the other end of the resistor and solder this to a leg of the switch. Drill some holes in your panel, mount the hardware and you are done :) pretty simple this one

Here's a crude picture of the mod

Image

since we are running in parallel when the circuit is on (switch enabled) we get a resistance range from between 0 and ~18k

pretty simple mod to do since you dont need to remove anything.

updated audio examples to follow (the examples below are from the first version)

ok heres the audio,

first here's the stock version without the mod enabled (this is my self sourced x0x)

http://www.bahnhof.se/wb447909/phono/x0 ... _stock.mp3

now here's the mod in the minimum position (~13.5k resistance)

http://www.bahnhof.se/wb447909/phono/x0 ... in_pwm.mp3

now here's the mod in the maximum position (~17.4k resistance)

http://www.bahnhof.se/wb447909/phono/x0 ... ax_pwm.mp3

here's an alternating version so you can hear the differences all in one go, it starts as stock, then min position, max position then stock again etc

http://www.bahnhof.se/wb447909/phono/x0 ... _modes.mp3

now finally here's a demo of the mod wihtout any other knob tweaks, im just sweeping the 50kb up and down, the very last pattern in the sequence is stock for reference

Sounds pretty good. I'll have to do this to mine and do the comparisons that way to make a real informed judgment. What side of the pot did you wire the switch to? I'm assuming the fully clockwise side?

I'm curious what you used to cut your holes in the back panel.
