I've been tossing between two different products currently and trying to figure out how each work in totality before deciding.
https://learn.adafruit.com/bike-wheel-p ... y/overview looks really neat and able to produce an arrangement of colors, however I can't see how it "times" for the rotations. I don't see any Hall effect sensor or something of the likes. Whereas the SpokePOV https://www.adafruit.com/products/19 has a magnet that helps calibrate the image for the correct speed.
I would like something to create a single whole image that surrounds the entire wheel.

Re: Calibration timing for Bike wheel
The Bike Wheel POV project does not have any way to sync the image to the wheel rotation. It would not be hard to add a hall sensor to the circuit. But you would need to modify the code also to sync your image to that position.
