Can Adafruit Ultimate GPS Breakout work standalone?

by andrewyg on Mon Apr 09, 2018 12:38 pm

Hi guys,
I'm looking at Adafruit Ultimate GPS Breakout and I was wondering can it work standalone? I meant can I power it up and it'll run and log location data to its storage (since it looks like it got its own data-logging system built-in) by itself without other board like Arduino supporting?

Michael...

Isn't the project run GPS breakout board on Atmega32u4 Breakout Board?

Exactly... If you were going to have something hanging on your dog's collar that could be standalone why add the mass of an extra board...

Then does the GPS breakout has the ability to log locations while powered by itself and be able to save the log out by USB to TTL serial cable? Or it require something like MicroSD card breakout board+?

I have the same question. Did you ever get an answer, or figure it out?

I think I found the answer, and it is "sort of." On this page it says," The only thing is that you do need to have a microcontroller send the "Start Logging" command. However, after that message is sent, the microcontroller can go to sleep and does not need to wake up to talk to the GPS anymore to reduce power consumption. The time, date, longitude, latitude, and height is logged every 15 seconds and only when there is a fix. The internal FLASH can store about 16 hours of data, " For applications 15 sec intervals will work. Not for mine, so I just ordered the GPS logger shield which has an SD card holder and is only a few dollars more. It also needs to be kick started by a micro controller.

@BeteNoire - Seems like you're found the key bits you're after. There is a stand alone mode (LOCUS) but does have the need to be somehow kick-started into it. But also, if your logging requirements aren't supported by this mode, then you would need to do something else.
