Avoiding soldering directly to Motor Hat

Post by robreuss »

For my past project, I soldered GPIO and I2C lines for other sensors directly to the Motor Hat.

For my current project, I'd like to avoid doing that. Can you suggest a combination of connectors, such as headers or perma-proto, that would help me avoid soldering other lines direct to my Motor Hat? The goal is to keep the Motor Hat "clean" so I can re-use it another project in the future if necessary.

Thanks!

There is a row of GPIO breakout holes next to the GPIO header. You could solder a strip of female header there and plug any connections into the header.

Thanks.

In order to avoid soldering to the Motor Hat at all (other than the header) could I use the extra long 2x20 header for the Motor Hat and then do the additional attachments using the Perma-Proto HAT (#2310)? Not sure exactly how these connections work.

Yes. You could build the perma-proto HAT withone of the stacking headers, then connect your other hardware using the GPIO breakout holes on the Perma-Proto.

Great!

The Perma-Proto (#2310) says that pin #26 is not available. Is that hardware pin #26 (SPIO CS1) or GPIO 26?

That would be GPIO #26. Although, if you build both HATs with stacking headers, you can get at it that way as well.

It was the SPI pin that I needed, so that's perfect.

Thanks for your quick responses.

Should I use stand-offs with the extra tall, extra long header (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1979)? The 16mm?

If you have a Pi model B+, you need the extra tall ones to clear the Ethernet & USB jacks. They will also work with other models of the Pi.
