Ultimate GPS hat output garbled, or did I do something wrong

I bought a GPS hat, and am getting garbled output:

I'm don't have a good GPS connection when I perform the commands from the tutorial. Sadly due to cable length I can't get a good fix and connect to a monitor at the same time right now. Is this output normal when you don't have a fix or do I have a broken unit?

Yes! I did everything up to those commands. Since my previous post I also tried the GPS board in my office, near a large window. I'm still not getting a fix after 30 minutes but it appears the data is less garbled when it has "more fix" then before.

Initial fix on a cold start can take a fair amount of time depending on signal strength. 30 minutes is not unheard of. "Near" a window is probably not good enough. Would need to be essential right at the window. But even then, being indoors can add time to the initial fix.

The garbled output is something else.

What model Pi are you using and what OS are you running on the Pi?
