Adafruit Audio FX Sound Board - WAV/OGG Trigger with 16MB Fl

by CaymanDan on Sun Nov 28, 2021 1:26 am

I have been trying to install one of the FX sound boards and I have run into a few issues. I have a independent 5v power supply which is feeding the board, and the pins are all run to a 12 position rotary switch coupled with a momentary switch to ground out the pin outs. So I tried connecting it to a computer and had no luck getting it to register as a drive to upload my sounds files, so tried a few different cables in case one was cooked but they all worked fine when I checked them on my phone. The green power LED would come on when power or the USB was connected and when I tried to manually trigger a couple of the pins to see if the default sound would play I was not getting any audio or the red light on the board.

I don't know if it was a good idea but I then took to a bit more fault finding with a multi meter and found that there was continuity between all of the trigger pins even without the switches disconnected. Not sure if that is a normal thing, my 12v knowledge is relatively basic.

Would love some feedback or suggestions before I try and buy another sound board. I am NZ based so its very hard to find the 16MB versions of the sound board.

It seems like the 12 position rotary switch is the likely culprit for the triggers all being linked. Can you de-solder and start testing with a minimal setup of just one trigger pin?

I can strip the board and work from scratch but before I do I just wanted to throw some more info at you and a very crude DWG. I made the unit removable with a 12 port plug going to the switch and a two twin port plugs for the volume up and down and 5v power from the PSU.

I pulled the unit out today and threw the multi meter at it again. I first tested the 12 position and momentary switch back to the 12 pin connector and everything is in order. There is no continuity between the trigger and ground wire until the momentary switch is activated and I double checked all the pins on the connectors to make sure I hadn't put the ground in the wrong pin out on one side of the switches. So I am happy that from the 12 position connector forward everything is working as designed.

I rechecked continuity on the trigger pins and found that when the 5v psu and ground was disconnected and there was no USB plug in there was no continuity between the trigger pins but there was continuity to all the ground pins on the board.

I have put a crude DWG together so if there is nothing amazingly wrong there I will remove all the pin outs and see if I can upload files with nothing extra soldered to the board.

Another thing to try is providing power from USB or wall source versus computer USB source. I believe the AudioFX device will not produce output when plugged in to a computer USB port.

You do not need to power this board through USB if that is a potential work around for the continuity issue you have been seeing with USB plugged in. The Vin and GND pins can be used with a 3 - 5.5 VDC source.

Since you can completely disconnect the rotary switch can you resume trigger testing without in place and providing power through the Vin / GND pins?

Thanks yeah I had a run through with this yesterday just plugging it into the wall with my phone charger and saw the same results with the plugged into the usb port and with the direct feed from the 5v PSU.

Using either power supply and with the rotary switch plug disconnected I was not able to get anything to trigger. The light remained green, did not change to red and no sounds were played from the small speaker I had connected.

Should there be continuity between the trigger pins and the ground pins on the board when power is connected either via usb or the hard wire pins?

Are there any other checks I can do with a multi meter to determine if there is a ground issue?

Normally we connect the trigger pins to GND via button. All trigger pins normally read high until a button is pressed then they go low.

Trigger Pins
Finally, we're at the trigger pins! These are the 11 inputs that can be used to trigger audio playing. We'll go over how to set the file for each pin in a later page.

Each pin has a pullup resistor, use a button/switch to connect to ground when pressed in order to 'trigger' it. The board has debouncing logic built in.

I just checked with a multimeter on my Audio FX mini to confirm the above.

It took a couple weeks as its getting a bit hectic coming into Christmas. I ended up de-soldering and removing all the pins I had put onto the board and had another go at the multi meter looking for the resistance between the grounds on the board and the trigger pins. Hopefully I was doing it right, so I took readings with 5V power from a wall phone charger and power applied to the board and with no power applied.

For power off I got a range of reading from 99.1 kΩ - 101.7 kΩ and with power on between 182.5 kΩ - 185 kΩ. This was using the multi meter to connect from the appropriate terminal pin to a ground pin on the board. The test leads I used had a resistance of 3.8Ω.

Since you have removed the switch can you solder on some bare headers and do some breadboad trigger testing? It would help to start with a known working case before moving forward.

I can try and find some spare headers to solder on but I don't have a board. Would it be possible to work through some tests and measurements without one?

The breadboard is not critical, but it would make testing easier.

If you have female jumper wires or micro test hooks those would both work well with testing directly on headers.
