I need a sensor to measure distance outdoor (up to a few meters).

I was thinking about the VL53L1X Time of Flight Distance Sensor and I was thinking to mount it inside an enclosure with a clear polycarbonate top (this one).

Would that work? I mean, would the polycarbonate top interfere?

Also, not that it rains often in Southern California, but would rain cause interference?

Polycarbonate in general has good transmission in the IR range so it should work. The datasheet describes the calibration that must be performed when the sensor is used behind a protective cover. Search for "cover glass".

Rain is another story. raindrops on the polycarbonate cover would act as little lenses and disperse the beam. A few drops probably wouldn't render it useless, but a heavy rain might.
