Barcode Reader/Scanner - PS/2 Help with Configuration

by vchinta on Mon Nov 14, 2016 1:14 pm

Hello,

I recently purchased a Barcode Reader/Scanner with PS/2 interface from Adafruit (link - https://www.adafruit.com/products/1202).

I'm having trouble configuring it to work in other modes - continuous, auto power on, flash etc. Trouble in the sense I am not able to configure the reader to work in any mode other the default.

I just wanted to find out if I'm doing it wrong before I decide I may have received a defective piece. This is how I'm trying to configure:

1. Scan Start of configuration barcode
2. Scan Continuous mode barcode
3. Scan End of configuration barcode
4. Scan Save parameters barcode

But the device always stays in the default mode. I have to physical press that small button on the top to read a code. Please help.

Try this:
Start Configuration
Continuous/Trigger Off
End Configuration

Now press the trigger button. Does the light stay on?

I did try it. And the light does not stay on.

You can find a video of my trial here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bwew736KYms5WDJFZDBZSnJWUHM/view?usp=sharing so you can verify if I'm doing anything else wrong.

Can this mean the device is faulty?

Weird. Mine doesn't act that way. We can try replacing it. Please email support@adafruit.com with a link to this thread for a replacement scanner

Hi! I received a replacement for my barcode scanner and this unit behaves the same way too.

I must be doing something wrong. From what I understand, as long as Vcc and Gnd are connected appropriately, the programming codes should work. Correct?

I tried both Host Data and Host Clock connected & disconnected. (according to their pin out description for MiniDIN 6 Male connector in the manual, though I would think it might actually be KB Data and KB Clock)

The reader scans everything fine but just refuses to get programmed.

When I scan the Version Information code, is it supposed to spit out what it scanned or what its version is? It just spits out the version information code (%$+/5) back to me.

Can you attach a picture/schematic of all your connections if the connections in fact matter? The only other reason I can think of is that the Manual present in the page might be out of date. But I know you guys would have changed it by now if that was the case.

I am using this in a project for a class and have my presentation is due this Friday. This is the only component left that I have to incorporate.

I expected, from the product description, that it is going to be a breeze to use this but my experience so far has been frustrating at best. Please reply soon.

Thank you,
Venkat

Try Continuous/AutoPowerOn or Flash/AutoPowerOn

Still does not work. I tried both. I tried all.

I even tried just to turn off the beeper. Doesn't work.

Yes I am. It reads everything perfectly. Even the programming codes. But that's my problem, even though it reads the programming barcodes, it doesn't get programmed!
