VL53L0X Laser Safety questions

Post by bmwflyboy »

Is this laser eye safe? Or is it an infrared sensor? In the video for this product it is mentioned that it is a 940mm laser. Does anyone have any solid info on this? If it is a laser why is there no info on what type/class of laser? Can this wavelength cause eye damage? Thanks.

Utterly.

The datasheet lists it as a class-1 laser device, defined by the IEC as:
Any laser or laser system containing a laser that cannot emit laser radiation at levels that are known to cause eye or skin injury during normal operation. This does not apply to service periods requiring access to Class 1 enclosures containing higher class lasers.

There's no enclosure, and no way to gain access to the IR laser diode without destroying the chip.

According to the data sheet, it's rated as eye-safe with the condition that no external optics be used to concentrate beam power density, though. Probably should avoid the temptation to add a collimator lens to reduce the beam's 35-degree spread.
