As promised (better late than never!), here is a link to some photos and a video of my game of life art project. Designing and making the frame, mount, and cover for the project was probably the most challenging part of the construction. Again, special thanks to mtbf0 for his programming help with the fading.

Any chance of putting it on youtube or vimeo at all? Am quicktime free here and keeping it that way.

Anyone is welcome to convert/upload the video to YouTube (I've never done so).

Wow, that is so much nicer then the hard transitions. I like the use of the diffuser material as well.

$238.72 - boards
$195.50 - components
$434.22 - total without mounting

Your cost analysis is pretty much consistent with what I paid (plus about $100 for the mounting supplies-- including wood for the frame, a mat, and three squares of custom-cut plexiglas). It's not the cheapest electronic art project, but it's a great addition to the room and is actually quite soothing thanks to mtbf's fading PWM code.
